Have you ever been tempted to just quit your day job and move to an island so cheap that you don’t need to work anymore? Are you dreaming to Do Life Right and be on permanent vacation?   

If you’ve reached your breaking point from noisy neighbors, city stressors and breathing in nice, fresh, polluted air – you could move to an island sanctuary that’s just a few short hours away.

At the same time, It’s close enough to home that you can hop on a plane and rush home for any emergency. There’s no need to look so far. Mexico, which is officially in the United States, is right next to the US yet offers a lifestyle that’s a world away. Located in the southern portion of North America, Mexico is bordered by the US, the Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

There are plenty factors to consider including accessibility, affordability and quality of life. Cozumel, Mexico ticks off all those boxes. This world-class vacation destination will treat you with the daily experience of walks by the beach, with a cold drink in hand set against the warm, aquamarine waters of the Caribbean Sea.  

The island of Cozumel is located just off the northeast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It’s easily accessible as it’s just one and a half hour away from Cancun Airport. The island rich with marine life, making it an ideal destination for divers and snorkelers. It’s only 12 miles off the coast of Playa del Carmen and is located along the famous Riviera Maya.   
 
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in Cozumel is the second largest coral reef system in the whole world. This makes it the perfect spot for turqoise waters, white sand beaches and otherworldly diving and snorkeling. Here, you can find island life at it’s finest!  

Cozumel also has plenty of ecotourism sites for nature lovers. One of the best things to do in Cozumel is to rent a bike and wander around the island while soaking in all the natural wonders. Rent a bike and head south along the Caribbean coast, for an easy 20km ride with the sea breeze.  

At the southern tip, you will arrive at Clelerain Ecological Park which is home to a preserved ecosystem including Colombia Lagoon and its diverse wildlife, including endangered marine turtles and crocodiles.  

Both on land and in the water, there are countless adventures to choose from in Cozumel. There are many great snorkeling tours and dive spots to explore. Those who choose to dive in will be treated to a colorful sight of coral reefs, fish and other marine life. The underwater world is one of the reasons that visitors keep coming to Cozumel again and again. 

Despite its popularity, Cozumel still offers great value for dollars spent even in terms of housing. Finding an apartment can be a challenge – as their mostly geared towards short-term rentals, but it can definitely be done if you’re lucky. A couple can live here comfortably for less than $1,900 a month.  

Living on the beach doesn’t need to be just a pipeline dream. These places show you that you can Do Life Right and enjoy excellent quality of life, for far less than you would spend on the same lifestyle in major cities.   

Before you head off, you’ll need to prepare your wardrobe for the tropics. Say goodbye to your stuffy suit and shoes and get ready to feel free in shorts and flip flops around the clock.
